Also, at noon on March 20, Morris will discuss traditional Native American uses of Sonoran Desert plants and herbs during a Harvest of the Desert program.Morris will share traditional Native American uses of Sonoran Desert plants including creosote and brittle bush as well as prickly pear and saguaro cactus.

For example, centuries ago the creosote bush was considered the drugstore of the desert because of its many uses. The leaves were made into a tea believed to have anti-inflammatory and antiseptic uses as well as to treat cuts, colds and flu.

Beans from the mesquite bush were an important food product, serving as the main source of flour in the desert for early native peoples.

Prickly pear was considered the "aloe vera of the desert," because it has the same properties as the more popular healing plant. It was also an important food source for early societies and is noted for its ability to lower blood sugar levels.
